FDA says to avoid pistachios amid salmonella scare

Posted by graeyze on March 31, 2009

FRESNO, Calif. – Federal food safetyfoods containing officials warned Monday that consumers should stop eating all pistachios while they figure out the source of a possible salmonella contamination.

Still reeling from the national salmonella outbreak in peanuts, the Food and Drug Administration said central California-based Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., the nation’s second-largest pistachio processor, was voluntarily recalling a portion of the roasted nuts it has been shipping since last fall. A Setton spokeswoman said that amounts to more than 2 million pounds of nuts.

“Our advice to consumers is that they avoid eating pistachio products, and that they hold onto those products,” said Dr. David Acheson, assistant commissioner for food safety. “The number of products that are going to be recalled over the coming days will grow, simply because these pistachio nuts have then been repackaged into consumer-level containers.”

Two people called the FDA complaining of gastrointestinal illness that could be associated with the nuts, but the link hasn’t been confirmed, Acheson said. Still, the plant decided to shut down late last week, officials said.

The recalled nuts represent a small fraction of the 55 million pounds of pistachios that the company’s plant processed last year and an even smaller portion of the 278 million pounds produced in the state in the 2008 season, according to the Fresno-based Administrative Committee for Pistachios.

California alone is the second-largest producer of pistachios in the world.

According to the company’s Web site, Setton Pistachio is in the corporate family of Commack, N.Y.-based Setton International Foods Inc. The company sells nuts, dried fruit, edible seeds, chocolate and yogurt-coated candies.

The FDA learned about the problem last Tuesday, when Kraft Foods Inc. notified the agency that it had detected salmonella in roasted pistachios through routine product testing. Kraft and the Georgia Nut Co. recalled their Back to Nature Nantucket Blend trail mix the next day.

The FDA contacted Setton Pistachio and California health officials shortly afterward, in what Acheson called a “proactive move.”

By Friday, grocery operator Kroger Co. recalled one of its lines of bagged pistachios because of possible salmonella contamination, saying the California plant also supplied its nuts. Those nuts were sold in 31 states.

Fabia D’Arienzo, a spokeswoman for Tulare County-based Setton Pistachio, said the company was only recalling certain bulk roasted in-shell and roasted shelled pistachios that were shipped on or after September 1.

Because Setton Pistachio shipped tote bags of nuts weighing up to 2,000 pounds to 36 wholesalers across the country, it will take weeks to figure out how many products could be affected, said Jeff Farrar, chief of the Food and Drug Branch of the California Department of Public Health.

“It will be safe to assume based on the volume that this will be an ingredient in a lot of different products, and that may possibly include things like ice cream and cake mixes,” Farrar said. “The firm is already turning around trucks in transit to bring those back to the facility.”

Salmonella, the most common cause of food-borne illness, is a bacteria that causes diarrhea, fever and cramping. Most people recover, but the infection can be life-threatening for children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

For nuts, roasting is supposed to kill the bacteria. But problems can occur if the roasting is not done correctly or if roasted nuts are re-contaminated. That can happen if mice, rats or birds get into the facility.

Last winter, a national salmonella outbreak was blamed on a Georgia company under federal investigation for flouting safety procedures and knowingly shipping contaminated peanuts.

The outbreak is still ongoing. More than 690 people in 46 states have gotten sick. Nearly 3,900 products made with peanut ingredients from Peanut Corp of America have been recalled.

California public health authorities have taken hundreds of samples at Setton’s processing facility, but lab results have not yet determined whether salmonella was found at the plant, Farrar said. The food companies’ own tests of the contaminated products isolated four different types of salmonella, but none were the same strain as the one found in the peanuts, Acheson said.

Near… Far… Wherever you are

Posted by graeyze on March 28, 2009

Jemuel now left and he’s in now in Japan, 3 hours from Philippines he said. I’m really sad because we can’t be together for 2 months although there’s internet so our communication is still continuous, so what! Hu-hu. His flight was 2:50 pm; he called me for the last time while I was sleeping. I dreamed of him by that time but I forgot. I called Globe to activate his roaming service so he can still receive text messages here in Philippines. I’m just thinking its just 2 months and he will be back and besides time is so fast maybe tomorrow it’s already May 30. Ha-ha. Maybe I should take seriously on reviewing IELTS to make myself busy and of course to pass and finish all the examinations required on going to US or Canada. Agencies for Saudi are calling me to have some interview but I don’t know where the place is. I’m scared to walk alone, you see I wish Jemuel was here to accompany me, but definitely he is not in favor of my plan going to Saudi so maybe I still will not be able to go there. Ha-ha. I miss him, Hu-hu.

Last day… I’ll wait=(

Posted by graeyze on March 27, 2009

Few hours left I will be left alone because Jemuel will go to Japan, Hu-hu. So we spent our day together, we met at SM North and ate our lunch first in Tokyo Tokyo, then we went to PRC-Manila to get his license, its raining to we wasn’t able to get his TOR in his school and go to PRC-Ever for some verification purposes to get his board rating. Well I think he doesn’t need it since he will go to Japan to have vacation, not to work, Ehem! Jemuel will be back in May 30!@_@ After that we went again to SM North, we bought some ink cartridges, lucky me I was able to buy a cheaper one. Ha-ha. Then at last I was also able to buy another usb cable that my brother was lost, amf. So as of now I was able to transfer the pictures from our digicam to computer. We went to Acer shop to let me see the model of the laptop Jemuel bought. Then he noticed that the power button of his laptop is different to other laptops displayed. It keeps on bothering him then we went to Ink for less to have some ink refill. Ha-ha. It really still keeps bothering him and I’m trying to figure out that maybe that’s the way it is because it’s brand new, but I know what Jemuel feels; he is not satisfied because he felt there’s a problem, and he can only replace the laptop for 7days although it has a 1 year international warranty. But because we were tired of walking we went to Starbucks and have Mocha Frappucino and to rest for a while. Jemuel was still bothered Ha-ha then I’m telling him that lets go back to the Annex and tell his concern. So we went back to the Annex and go to Villman shop and Jemuel said his concern, the guy there told him that if there is a problem they will replace the laptop immediately. So Jemuel was still confused by that time if he will replace his laptop since he had already installed some files. Time was really fast and I have to go to meet my family because its Benedict graduation day and we will have our dinner in Tramway at Timog. So I ride a taxi and bid Jemuel a good bye kiss= (. I felt really sad thinking it will take 2 months to see him again. I will just keep myself busy and start to review for IELTS I guess. By the way he was able to replace his laptop. HUHUHUHUHUHUHUHU=’ (It’s so sad…

I watched “SUNDO” movie

Posted by graeyze on March 25, 2009

I haven’t slept yet today, maybe just a nap because I really can’t go to sleep so I’m awake for almost 24 hours. Ha-ha.  I went to POEA to try again passing my requirements going to Saudi. At last I was able to pass it, Ha-ha. I hope POEA will call me soon. Then as I was going to SM West I fell asleep in the bus. Luckily, I woke up and I already there. I had some headache and I don’t want to go home yet. So I ate my dinner at Mc Donald’s and ate a Chicken Meal with Mc Float then I watched movie “Sundo”. It really was scary especially I was just alone watching the movie. But I hate the people who are in groups beside me there they are very loud! By the way the movie was like a Final Destination because all of them are lined up to die. Robin Padilla who is one of cast was the one who sees dead people after his survival in being a coma. Robin there has a sibling who is blind which is Rhian Ramos. Sunshine Dizon was a friend of Robin and has a driver who is Mark Baustista. There is also a Katrina Halili who played a sexy girl then Hero Angelos with his Auntie played by Glyda Mercado. Sunshine Dizon offer a help to have a check-up for the eyes of Rhian Ramos in Manila. All of them are from Baguio I should say. Then to cut the story short they are all riding in one van. Then Robin had a bad dream that the van will have a car accident. He stopped the van and so nothing happens. But he sees 5 spirits as he was saying including a 1 baby who is crying. The movie says that when someone is near death someone will come to him/her to fetch him from the death that’s why it was called Sundo. Then Robin sees the husband of Glyda who recently passed away, that was the first time so he doesn’t know what is the meaning of it. Then Glyda went to the comfort room slip the floor and heavy materials goes to her face then she died. The next is Hero Angeles, Robin saw the best friend of Hero who had a suicide then Hero died in an electric shock. Because of what’s happening they went to a person who can explain what’s happening. Then everything became clear to them that 5 of them will die because Robin only saw 5 spirits and they were 7 in the van. Then Robin saw the Grandfather of Mark so it’s a sign that Mark would be the next although he had skipped the first attempt of death, the second one really kills him. He is eating in a turo-turo then the fire puts on his face and he was crying for help and because he can’t see because of it, he was hit by a truck. Then they were thinking that’s why Robin saw a baby because Katrina had a baby before but Katrina really denies it and don’t want to believe what Robin was saying. So they have no choice but to leave Katrina’s house but as they leave Robin saw another Katrina so they went back to their house and found out that Katrina has a twin sister who has abused and died. By that time Katrina was in a spa, they try to help her but Katrina died because of over heat in the sauna. So Robin, Rhian and Sunshine were only left. Robin thought that Sunshine is the one who will survive because he didn’t see any spirits related to her. Then Sunshine confesses that the baby he saw is her baby. When she was in medical school and studying she got pregnant so she aborted the baby. Then Robin saw his mother, but he and Rhian are siblings right? So it’s either one of them who will die. Then death attacks again, So Sunshine did to save her life she killed Rhian in suffocation, because she thinks that in order to save life one must die. But Robin didn’t know it that Rhian was already dead. Then he saw Rhian in a roof top, he tried to convinced her to go down only to found out that Rhian was already dead and saw his mother who is dead too, then he fell from the top of the building to swimming pool. Then he thought he was still alive by that time and he saw Sunshine crying that she doesn’t want to die and he has to go away. Robin didn’t get it first but as he looks to the swimming pool he saw his body drowned. Then Sunshine said I killed your sibling why she still has to die, Robin was still shock and Sunshine didn’t escape death also. So in short all of them died ha-ha. Then at the end of the movie it leaves a message “Ikaw, sino ang sundo mo?” waaaaaaa!!! It’s really scary! That’s the story all about and I will rate it 6.5 out of 10. Then after I watched of course I went home. Ha-ha.

The RN Contract Trap

Posted by graeyze on March 24, 2009

For many foreign nurses (RNs) the chance to immigrate to the U.S. is the opportunity of a life time. For so many, immigrating to the U.S. is the reason they went to nursing school and took up the profession. Many others, such as marketing majors, physicians, computer engineers, etc. have switched professions to become nurses in order to immigrate to the U.S.

The shortage spurred the growth and creation of hybrid industries such as nurse registries and temporary nursing staff companies. These types of companies assign nurses on a temporary basis with their client hospitals, medical facilities, and private homes.

A nurse working for one of these companies for example, might find herself working at Hospital A for 2 days out of the week and Hospital B for 3 days. Then, a few months later, working 4 days for Hospital C. The RN goes wherever her employer has been contracted to provide services. She is not an employee of the hospital, but rather the registry company.

Because of the shortage, various RN employers (hospitals, agencies, RN staffing companies) heavily recruit for RNs overseas. Foreign RNs who wish to immigrate are delighted at the opportunity the recruiters offer and are often all too eager to sign up.

While this path may be one of the easiest ways to immigrate, it is not without its pitfalls. Employment-based sponsorship means the RN will be allowed to immigrate if the RN intends to work on a permanent basis for the petitioning employer. This is a critical condition of immigrating that carries consequences if not fulfilled. During the typical recruitment process, the RNs are promised sponsorship in exchange for working for the employer. Contracts are prepared and representations are made regarding the nature of work, type of work, place of work, working conditions and wages. Many RNs are so eager to immigrate, they do not carefully read these contractual documents, ask serious questions regarding the terms and conditions, or have the contracts reviewed by their own attorney.

In the excitement of the prospect of immigrating to the U.S. many RNs are seduced with the notion that the dream job awaits them in the U.S. For some this is true, but for many, it has drastic consequences. The RNs gloss over the contracts and assume an attitude of, “I’ll deal with it later.”

The most common contractual clause that wreaks havoc on an immigrating RN’s life is the breach of contract damages clause. Most contracts typically require the RN to work for a specific number of years and failure to do so triggers the damages clause. The damages can range from $15,00 to $50,000 dollars!

Many RNs signing these contracts are unfamiliar with the litigious culture in the U.S. Some come to the U.S. and find the working conditions and salaries they were told they would receive are not the same as represented when first recruited. Some conditions are so unbearable.

For example, being placed in graveyard shifts in hospitals far from home. Or, not being placed in any hospital and collecting no salary while the sponsor tries to obtain a new client for the RNs placement. Many of these RNs then leave their employers and this is when additional tragedy strikes. The employer begins a campaign of harassment and may sue for breach of contract and obtains a judgment against the RN for the penalty amount. The judgment typically comes with a wage garnishment order. This means the RN’s new employer is required to pay a portion of the RN’s wages to the sponsor to cover the judgment. Because RNs are in a licensed occupation requiring a reporting of where they work, it is very simple for the sponsor to locate the RN and exact the judgment.

But, worse than a breach of contract is the possible immigration consequence. The RN has obtained permanent residency because she stated she intends to work on a permanent basis for her sponsor. By leaving or changing employers shortly after entering the U.S., she has now opened the door for the Immigration Service to revoke the green card! Some employers immediately notify the Immigration Service when an RN leaves exposing the RN to possible green card revocation and deportation.

For many others, the immigration consequence comes several years later when the RN is applying for U.S. citizenship. The Immigration Service reviews the basis of the green card and determines how long the RN worked for her sponsor. If it determines that the RN has only worked for a short period of time, it may begin revocation and deportation proceedings against both the RN and her family members who obtained green cards through her.

These tragic consequences can be avoided by careful review in the beginning. For many of those currently in the position, there is still immigration and contractual relief available. The U.S. Constitution prohibits slavery and indentured servitude and because in many cases the sponsoring employer breaches the contract, the employee is not liable for any damages. This core constitutional value is the basis for providing relief to those forced to leave their sponsors. This will be the subject of our second part of this article.

We were okay Ha-ha.

Posted by graeyze on March 24, 2009

Jemuel and I were okay now, Ha-ha. I went to their house today to see him because I haven’t seen him for almost 1week. Again, I went there to see only him, Ha-ha. But of course there is his mother and amf tita. Ha-ha. I really felt uncomfortable so we decided to go to SM North. We went to The Annex to look for laptops, maybe one of these days Jemuel will have a new one. Well I’m happy because that’s all he ever wanted. I hope his mother will buy him the one we saw in Dell or Asus. We ate at Yoshinoya and shares stories. The SM was closing when we went home. I’m quite happy because we’re okay again, but I’m sad because I know on Saturday he will go to Japan. Hu-hu. By the way before the settlement was happen I was in SM North and Trinoma by that time, I planned to go to URC to post my pass letter, but my picture took 20 minutes and if ever I will still go, maybe their already closed. I also inquired at Fitness First about their exercise program, its expensive I don’t think I will enroll there. In that time Jemuel and I were texting, I knew he’s mad at me by that time, why? I don’t know. Ha-ha. And I felt maybe its time to make things okay since he said sorry for what he has said before and he still loves me. So then he invited me in their house that’s why I went to their house. Anyway, finally! I already got my Starbucks planner with a free cheap bag. Its so eeew Ha-ha. If you would noticed I erased my previous posts regarding our break-up, Ha-ha just to make things forget. This is to sum up everything that happens today.

Tomorrow would be another day, Hays… I’m thinking what to do tomorrow; maybe I will start my review in IELTS waaaaaaa! Ha-ha. I just want to keep myself busy to forget some things Ha-ha and I know practicing English language especially in Speaking needs a lot of practice. If you asked me when I will take my exam, maybe I’ll just wait for the go signal of the review center (9.0 niners ielts review center) if I’m ready. And besides IELTS exam is the only thing left, then I can get my visa screen certificate so maybe I should take it especially now I have nothing to do while waiting for the calls of agencies or hospitals where I applied. Okay… Let’s get it on…

Looking back

Posted by graeyze on March 22, 2009

Looking back when I’m still studying before is what makes me today. I like to share this with you because I’m wondering why students right now don’t give extra effort in their studies when that what makes their future. Way back when I was in elementary, I was in a star section till Grade3. I wasn’t able to maintain my grades because I got sick so when I’m in grade 4 I was in section 2. I think Grade 4 was the hardest during my elementary years because there were times that I really got a low grades in my exams, not just low grades but failing Ha-ha. But I never experienced failing grades in my class card by that time. When I was in high-school, 2nd year was the most difficult for me, I got low grades than what I expected and wish I could be but in fairness, I was still in top10 by that time Ha-ha. Then I get used to it not on getting high grades when I was in 3rd year and 4th but take note that I didn’t get line of 7 grades, but somehow along the way nothing is really perfect then I remember I failed for the first time of my life, I failed in Physics I got 74 in my class card when I was in 4th year. I cried a lot, it’s my first time! Then I studied and work for it. I didn’t need to pay that teacher or attend her “tutorial” classes just to pass. Hmph. After all I realized that I don’t deserve that grade because I got some news that if you had tutored with her since then you wont failed. That teacher is just making money, she will failed students in order to enroll to her tutorial classes. When I stepped college, it’s a lot easier for me. I got good grades when I was in 1st year; my goal is to get a flat 1.00. Ha-ha. Well I did, I got 1.00 in Natural Science. But again nothing is easy in this world, yes I got good grades because I worked for it, there are also time that when I knew I have a low grade in that subject I really worked hard for it. I don’t want to get 3.00 nor 5.00. Nursing is not easy after all; it was NCM 101 that makes my days like a doom. We had a fast track in the lectures, and I really got low and failing grades on my exams! I thought I was going to be kicked out in our school. Bu thanks God I wasn’t. I got 3.00. Well its okay than to be kicked out right? Ha-ha. But never in my whole college years again had I got 3.00 nor 5.00. Just once. Ha-ha. Then I took my board exam, the exam that I’m really afraid to take since I was in college. Of course after 4 years of studying this is the final deliberation if I could be a registered nurse or not. Luckily I passed with a lot of prayers because I wasn’t confident by that exam. I then took the nclex-rn examination, this is the exam that I read really costly and very hard. I took the challenge and started to review more seriously than before. Yes I passed. I passed all my exams for the first time. Isn’t it great? Ha-ha. But still I know I’m just an average type person, If I can then you can… if only you study and do your best. Sometimes you have to failed but for me if you think you did your best and failed maybe because you can do more. Exert an extra effort. You didn’t do your best unless you already meet your goal. And lastly believe in God, have faith.

9 Reasons People Cheat

Posted by graeyze on March 21, 2009

So, are cheaters born cheaters, or do certain situations cause people to cheat? Probably a little bit of both. Here are some situations that make people cheat:

1. Bored
I’d say this is the most common reason that people cheat. It’s tough to keep that edge throughout a relationship. Things start off grand and then level off and then you both realize that it’s still real life. When you meet someone else, that inaugural excitement of a new relationship kicks back in.

2. Dependence
At first glance, cheating seems like independent behavior. It could be interpreted as doing what you want, when you want. But I would argue that cheating is a dependent behavior. A cheater is dependent because they are not strong enough to break up with their significant other in order to get with the new person.

3. Confusion
Sometimes life or a particular situation can get to you. When the perfect storm of confusion is going on in your head, you make mistakes.

4. Because They Let You
Forgiving a cheater is putting up with it, and starts a vicious cycle. That person who cheated may lose respect for you and might continue to cheat-because they know they can get away with it, because you’ll continue to take them back.

5. Nurturing
If someone is mistreating you, then your first instinct is to get away from him or her. But sometimes it’s not that simple-maybe you are raising kids together. If you feel trapped in a bad relationship, it’s only natural that you will run to the open arms of a person who treats you well.

6. Revenge
This is quite simple- an eye for an eye. Cheat on them if they cheat on you. If they continuously hurt you or abuse you in some way, you do it to get them back.

7. Confirmation of Attractiveness
Sometimes when you’re in a long relationship, or if your significant other is taking you for granted, you begin to wonder if you’re still attractive. Perhaps, because you were out on the dating circuit, you felt more attractive when you were single. If you have an affair, you’ve proven that a new person can be attracted to you.

8. The Thrill
Some people just enjoy the thrill of cheating: running around secretly, risking getting caught, andcreating thrilling moments with a forbidden romance.

9. They Don’t Consider It Cheating, Even Though You Might
Relationships have that grey area, usually right before you become exclusive. He thinks date #4 is when you’re “together,” and you think date #2 is when you’re “together.” If you haven’t talked about exclusivity, someone may think they are well within their rights to see other people, even though the other person in the relationship may not.

I don’t understand why people don’t break up as soon as they have an urge to cheat. Is it natural to have temptation, or is temptation a sign that the relationship is losing its fire? What reasons would you add to this list, and do you disagree with any? If you’ve ever cheated, why did you do it? Could you forgive a cheater? If you are single, but seeing a person who is in a committed relationship, does that make you a cheater?
